Today, heart disease kills most of us, however, we seem to dread cancer more. After billions of dollars in research it appears that the quotes below, credited to two famous men, were truly prophetic.

The National Cancer Institute is currently investigating the following foods as cancer preventing super foods. Specifically those at the top of the pyramid. This will further clarify the biological effect of these foods on health and cancer prevention.

  • Garlic.
  • Cabbages.
  • Soy, carrots, celery, and parsnips.
  • Onions, green tea, tumeric, citrus.
  • Whole wheat, flax seed, and brown rice.
  • Tomato, egg plant and peppers (the solanacea).
  • Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts (the Cruciferae).
  • Oats, mints, oregano, cucumber, rosemary, sage and potato.
  • Thyme, chives, cantaloupe, basil, tarragon, barley and all the berries.

These plants are rich in phytochemicals. There may be over 10,000 different phytochemicals that have biological activity in humans. So although taking an iron free mega-multivitamin/mineral and extra antioxidants is part of good anti-aging and longevity strategy, there is NO substitute for including a generous amount of a variety of the above super foods in our diets.

Burning Calories with Food

Foods that burn your mouth also burn up extra calories. After eating any food, your metabolic rate rises. Hot spices boost that metabolism by an extra 25 percent, according to one study. Hot and spicy mustard works, too.

The study involved feeding 12 people 766 calorie meals. All of the meals were the same, but some were spiked with three grams each of chili and mustard sauce. Those who ate the spicy foods burned up to an extra 45 calories in three hours. Some individuals burned up to an extra 76 calories!

  • Red peppers
  • The spice turmeric (curcumin) powder
  • Any chili peppers
  • Black and/or red pepper

Added Benefits

Hot foods may cause your brain to release feel good endorphins. Because hot foods increase body temperature, they can also be effective in fighting fever and relieving flu symptoms. Hot peppers can help with respiratory problems and act as an expectorant.

The Wives Tale. Many people avoid eating spicy food because they hold the old belief that they cause ulcers if eaten regularly. Luckily, for those that love spicy food, the old wives tale is not rooted in truth. Spicy food does not cause ulcers; in fact, there isn't any one type of food that actually causes ulcers.
