Tighten Your Abs
Having strong abdominal muscles can help protect your back from injury. Do this core strengthening pelvic tilt two to three times a week: Lie on your back with knees beent, feet flat on the floor, and lower back flattened. Pull in your belly button toward your spine, contracting your abs; your pelvis should lift slightly off the floor. Do two to three sets of 12 reps.

Cap Sodium at 1,500mg Daily
Four years ago, Americans were told to cut back on their sodium intake to bring it below 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The recommendation came with a little side note that a select group of people - those with hypertension, middle-aged and older adults - should restrict their intake even further, to 1,500mg/day. Now, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced that 69.2 percent of U.S. adults are in the group advised to limit sodium intake to 1,500 mg/day, based on the CDC study of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data.

Quick Recipe

Chicken Wraps
Hummus and feta cheese give these wraps unbeatable flavor. Hummus is a great alternative to mayonnaise; try it on your favorite sandwich, too!
1/3 cup prepared hummus
4 whole wheat tortillas (8 inches)
2 cups cubed cooked chicken breast
1/4 cup chopped roasted sweet red peppers
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil leaves
Spread hummus on tortillas; top with chicken, peppers, cheese and basil. Roll up.
Nutrition facts: 1 wrap equals 300 calories, 8g fat (2g saturated), 58mg cholesterol, 408mg sodium, 26g carbohydrate, 3g fiber, 27g protein
Diabetic exchanges: 3 very lean meat, 2 starch, 1/2 fat

Portfolio Diet
In a study of the Portfolio Diet (a high fiber diet of soy protein, plant sterols and almonds), participants raised their HDLs (high density lipoproteins or "good" cholesterol) and lowered their LDLs (low density lipoprotiens or "bad" cholesterol), triglycerides and lipid ratios. The Portfolio group improved their blood sugar response to carbohydrates.

Food Facts

Substitute mashed potatoes for some of the egg yolks in your deviled-egg recipe to cut both fat and cholesterol. If needed, a drop or two of yellow food coloring ensures just enough color to give your lighter filling the appearance and flavor guests look for in this classic favorite.
