Omega 3 for CRP

Omega-3 supplements can reduce blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) as much as statin medications. CRP is a marker for inflammation and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Researchers from the University of California, Davis and the U.S. Department of Agriculture studied 34 middle-aged men with elevated blood triglyceride levels. Half took three grams a day of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid; the other half got olive oil as a placebo. After 90 days, those taking DHA saw their CRP levels drop by 15% - almost as much as the 15% to 25% seen with statins. Source: The New England Journal of Medicine

Vary Your Veggies
From asparagus to zucchini, you can reap a bounty of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients when you choose from a colorful variety of vegetables.

  • Get lots of dark green veggies like broccoli, spinach, romaine lettuce and collard greens.
  • Pick plenty of orange veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and butternut squash.
  • Eat more dry beans and peas such as pinto beans, kidney beans, split peas and lentils.
  • Mix it up even more with favorites like tomatoes, potatoes and corn and less familiar options like artichokes, eggplant and parsnips.

Brain Food
Foods marketed to boost brain power in all age groups, from infancy to senior citizens, are all the rage. Ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids star in "brain" foods like nutrition bars, juice and cereals. Though emerging evidence does tell us about the power of various nutrients to promote cognitive health, beware of overly optimistic claims for some of these products.

•  Start your day with veggies – and all the nutrients they provide. Whip up an omelet or scrambled eggs with chopped fresh spinach, tomatoes, peppers or any favorite vibrant colored veggie.

 Easy Recipe

Chili Sauce Dip
1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce
2 tablespoons horseradish
3 to 4 drops of Tabasco sauce
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon minced parsley
Combine all ingredients. Chill and serve with crisp raw vegetables. Makes 24 (1 tablespoon each) servings.
Per serving: 16 calories, less than 1g fat, 0 cholesterol, 214mg sodium.
