Fitness Tip
Stretching Exercises Keep You Limber
Stretching exercises alone will not improve endurance or strength to a great degree but are very important in overall health.
Do stretching exercises after endurance and strength exercises, when your
muscles are warm. If stretching exercises are the only kind of exercise you are able to do, do them at least 3 times a week, up to every day. Always warm up your muscles first.
Do each exercise 3 to 5 times at each session. Hold the stretched position for 10 to 30 seconds.
Total session should last 15 to 30 minutes. Move slowly into position; never jerk a stretch into position. Stretching may cause mild discomfort, but should not cause pain. Consider:
• Spine Release Stretching Exercise
• Calf Wall Push Stretch
• Palm Touch Stretching Exercise
• Gentle Hamstring Stretch for Seniors (more gentle stretching exercises geared toward seniors in the Seniors Exercise Section).

Nutrition Tip
Boiled Soybeans
You might be familiar with edamame, a common appetizer in Japanese restaurants - it's simply boiled soybeans.
You can find this fun finger food in the grocery store, too. Look in the natural food section or the frozen aisle near the vegetables. Edamame comes shelled as beans but you should try edamame still in the shell - preschoolers will enjoy popping the beans directly in their mouths.
Open a bag, boil for three minutes, and you’ve got a nutritious snack or side dish.

Wellness Tidbit

Whole-Grain Cereal for a Healthy Heart
According to a new study, eating seven or more servings of whole-grain breakfast cereals each week is associated with a lower risk of heart failure. But remember that not all cereals deliver the goods. The best way to figure out which cereals really are whole grain? Ignore the name (hint: "nine-grain" doesn't cut it), and be sure to look for the word whole before the wheat, corn, or rice on the ingredient label. A few that are truly whole-grain: Kashi Mountain Medley Granola, Post Selects Great Grains Crunchy Pecans, and General Mills Total Raisin Bran.
