Seasoning Blends

Enjoying what you eat is a top priority! Fortunately, you can enjoy plenty of flavorful foods prepared with less salt and sodium.

Herb-spice blends are good substitutes for salt and are available in most supermarkets. As an alternative, you can make your own tasteful creations.

If you are making your own salt substitute, remember to make portions that you will use in a short period of time, herbs don’t hold their flavor forever. A little goes a long way, so go easy. Sample the new flavors by adding small amounts to your dishes, you can always add more.

Here are a few spice-blend recipes to help you create your own masterpieces:

Chinese Five-Spice Blend

Ingredients:
1/4 cup of ground ginger
2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons of ground cloves
1 tablespoon each of round allspice and anise seed.

Combine. This goes well with chicken, fish or pork.

Mexican Blend

Ingredients:
1/4 cup of chili powder
1 tablespoon each of ground cumin and onion powder
1 teaspoon each of dried oregano, garlic powder and red pepper
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.

Combine. For chili, enchiladas, tacos, chicken, pork and beef.

Mixed Herb Blend

Ingredients:
1/4 cup of dried parsley
2 tablespoons of dried tarragon
1 tablespoon each of dried oregano, dill weed and celery flakes.

Combine. For salads, steamed vegetables or fish.

Garden Seasoning Blend

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground basil
1-1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Dash of cayenne 1-1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon ground parsley
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Mix well.
