Spiced Apple and Bramble Sauce
Low Sodium Recipe
Apples and blackberries cooked together and spiced with mixed spice. Spiced Apple and Bramble Sauce is a delicious sauce for pancakes, waffles, ice cream etc. Watch carefully towards the end of the cooking time so that this sauce doesn't burn.
1 pound of cooking apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
5 ounces blackberries in apple juice
1/4 teaspoon * mixed spice
Put the chopped apple, the juice from the blackberries and the mixed spice into a saucepan. Cook, covered, over a gentle heat, shaking the pan frequently, for five to ten minutes, or just until the apples collapse into a puree. Tip the contents of the pan into a bowl and allow to cool.
Add the blackberries and stir gently so as not to break up the fruit too much. Transfer to a serving dish and refrigerate until needed.
*The 'mixed spice' of British cookery is primarily used in sweet baking and is a fragrant reminder of Christmas recipes. It typically includes cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves or allspice.
