Applesauce Brownies use olive oil, the good fat. The use of unsweetened applesauce and cocoa powder keeps sugar content down. Natural honey sweetens these brownies perfectly.

Applesauce Brownies

Recipe Ingredients

3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 package active dry yeast
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel
3 tablespoons apricot preserves
2/3 cup ground almonds

Recipe Directions

Preheat oven to 375-degrees.

Combine oil, applesauce and cocoa. Add honey and stir until dissolved. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients together and stir into the mixture.

Pour the batter into a greased and floured (or wax paper lined and sprayed) 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle on nuts (optional). Bake about 20 to 30 minutes or until top is set but edges are not dried out. Toothpick will come out clean.

Recipe Note

If no pure honey is available or on hand, you can use another 1/2-cup unsweetened apple sauce instead.
