Stop Snacking at Work! - We have all been there, you turn up to work full of good intentions for the day. You promise yourself you will not give in to temptation and not a single sugary snack will tempt you at work today. Nope, no snacking for you today! Of course, later in the day your stomach rumbles. It's telling you it's hungry.

Fitness Tip

Weaker on the Weekend?
Weekends spell trouble for weight control. Falling off the wagon on Saturday and Sunday means overeating 29 percent of the time. That can easily erase any progress you made Monday through Friday. Researchers tracking the food intake of 48 people in their 50s found they consumed 236 more calories on average, on Saturdays than during the week. That adds up to nine pounds of body fat in one year. Jump on the scale every Friday night and again on Monday morning to keep you motivated to avoid weekend temptations. If you do indulge, don't waste calories on foods or beverages you don't absolutely love by mindlessly munching. Be aware that making small changes can help a lot; choosing a bottle of light beer or a glass of wine instead of a creamy mixed drink, for example, can save up to 350 calories.

Nutrition Tip

Meat and Beans
All foods made from meat, poultry, fish, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the meat and beans group. The foods in this group give you many nutrients, including protein; B vitamins (niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, and B6); vitamin E; and minerals such as iron, zinc, and magnesium. Meats, especially high-fat processed meats such as bologna, contain saturated fats and cholesterol, so it's a good idea to limit these, or to try lower fat varieties. Also choose poultry, fish, beans, and peas more often. Nuts and seeds can be included for variety since they contain healthy fats, however, limit the amount to avoid getting too many calories. For best health practices, bake, broil, or grill your meats - avoid frying.

Food Additives May Make Your Kids Misbehave
Researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK found that artificial food coloring and sodium benzoate preservatives are directly linked to increased hyperactivity in children. The additives included Yellow #5, Yellow #6, Red #40, and sodium benzoate, which are commonly found in packaged foods in the United States, but the researchers don't know if it's a combination of the chemicals or if there's a single one that's the primary culprit. You can find Red #40, Yellow #5, and Yellow #6 in Lucky Charms and sodium benzoate in some diet sodas, pickles, and jellies.

When faced with a large variety of items (such as a buffet), consumers tend to underestimate how much of each item is present thereby the potential to eat more than one realizes, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Tasty Tidbit...
For a quick refreshing dessert, simply hollow out lemons that have been halved lengthwise and fill with a large scoop of lemon sorbet. To keep them from rolling around on the plate, remove a thin slice off the rounded bottom of each boat. Freeze for several days, if desired.
