Fitness Tip

Aging with Personality
Living long seems to run in families. Researcher Thomas Perls of Boston University School of Medicine has been tracking people who reach 100 - and their kids, many in their 70s. Perls says good genes were a factor - but personality counts, too. Children of centenarians were more likely to be outgoing, and likely have more social supports. And they were less likely to dwell on life's problems, and likely managed stress better.

Nutrition Tip

Cherries
A bowl of cherries is a trove of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant phytonutrients. Sweet or tart, cherries are a good source of fiber and vitamin C, with small amounts of the minerals copper, magnesium, potassium and zinc as well as vitamin K, newly appreciated for bone building. Both kinds of cherries contain the sight-saving phytonutrients lutein and zeaxanthin and are among the top sources of flavonols like quercetin, credited with reducing inflammation and lowering the risk of heart disease. Quip or Quote of the Week

Quote
"This recipe is certainly silly. It says to separate two eggs, but it doesn't say how far to separate them." -- Gracie Allen

Quick Recipe

Mexican Pico de Gallo Salsa
Chop up a couple of your favorite tomatoes with 1/2 of a chopped jalapeno pepper, a couple of spoons of chopped onion, fresh coriander, a squeeze of lemon juice and a bit of salt. It's an instant party pleaser!

Tidbit(s)

Dieting and Water
It is not scientifically proven that drinking water helps us lose weight. Certainly if you fill your stomach with water, satiety may be reached earlier but thus far there is no specific scientific evidence to back this claim. Barbara Rolls of Pennnsylvania State University found that it might help if water is incorporated in the food -- if you turned a casserole into a soup, for example -- but not if you just drink a glass of water.

Food Fixes

Half from whole: In recipes that require all-purpose flour, use half all-purpose flour and half whole-wheat flour. You will add whole grains and fiber and the kids won’t even notice!

There are more than 1,000 varieties of bread on the market – enough to please any palate.

Tasty Tidbit...
Layer slices of pumpernickel or rye with slices of lean turkey and low-fat colby cheese, shredded lettuce and tomato slices. Add a dab of spicy mustard, a sprinkle of oregano, a dash of vinegar and serve.
