Fitness Tip

Schedule 30!
There are 1,440 minutes in every day. Schedule 30 of them for physical activity! Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy. People who are active live longer and feel better. Exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight. It can delay or prevent diabetes, some cancers and heart problems. Most adults need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days per week. Examples include walking briskly, mowing the lawn, dancing, swimming for recreation or bicycling. Stretching and weight training can also strengthen your body and improve your fitness level. The key is to find the right exercise for you. If it is fun, you are more likely to stay motivated. You may want to walk with a friend, join a class or plan a group bike ride. If you've been inactive for awhile, use a sensible approach and start out slowly.

Nutrition Tip

Choosing Chips
Choose options for snacking chips with the least amount of saturated fat and modest amounts of sodium -- for your heart's sake. Look for chips labeled "reduced fat" to trim calories. Be aware some contain olestra (Olean), a calorie-free fat substitute that in large amounts can cause loose stools. Select varieties that are "lightly salted", "low salt", or "no added salt" to keep sodium in check. Keep in mind that exotic flavors are often loaded with more sodium than other flavors. No matter what chip you choose, take a small portion then close the bag and put it away, so you're not tempted to keep reaching for more.

Tidbit(s)

Cheese Made out of Beans?
According to a recent study, scientists have developed a new low-fat cheese that is a healthier alternative to the regular high-fat version. The new cheese is made from something called vetch, a lentil-like legume grown in Pakistan, which is blended with powdered cow's milk to create a higher-protein cheese. The resulting product is a cheese that tastes like full-fat mozzarella. There is no word yet on when it will make its way to your favorite neighborhood pizza place. In the meantime, you can top your dishes with tasty low-fat cheeses.

Food Fixes

Carrots and spinach are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant. It can also be converted to vitamin A in the body, which helps to improve eyesight.

Evaporate dairy: Skip the heavy cream and opt for evaporated skim milk.

Tasty Tidbit...
Fill a whole wheat tortilla with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese and diced veggies, roll it up and enjoy. These are also good on-the-go when wrapped in foil.
