Fitness Tip
Lifestyle Activities
|
Even a shopping trip can be exercise: it is a chance to walk and carry your bags. In addition, doing chores like lawn mowing, leaf raking, gardening, and housework can count as activity. If you can do only a few or none of these activities, it is OK. Appreciate what you can do, even if you think it is a small amount. Doing any movement - even for a short time - can make you healthier. Remember, each activity you do is a step toward a more active lifestyle.
Nutrition Tip
Healthier Frozen Fish Options
More healthful frozen options are now available that are unbreaded and feature a variety of seasonings, herbs and marinades. Though the less nutritional pollock that companies have traditionally favored for breaded fillets and fish sticks still dominate, omega-3 rich salmon can now be found alongside tiliapia, sole and more. And safety need not be a concern; the fish used for frozen fare are not the large predator fish that harbor toxins in amounts potentially dangerous for pregnant women and small children. New offerings are pan seared or flash-grilled to partially cook them, then are individually wrapped to allow you to cook only what you need. Additional cooking time is needed, sacrificing a bit of convenience, but it's a plus for taste and nutrition.
Quip or Quote of the Week
Quip
Eating a small amount of protein (of any kind) makes you feel fuller and leads to overall weightloss, especially in the abdominal region, according to a recent study out of Skidmore College. The findings suggest that consuming a higher-protein diet in six smaller meals a day significantly reduces total body weight, as well as abdominal fat mass in overweight men and women.

Tidbit(s)
Enhanced Water
Kellogg's Special K2O Protein Water Mix Iced Tea packs your water with a nutritional punch. Add a packet of this mix to your 16.9-ounnce bottle (hopefully an eco-friendly bottle?), and you'll get five grams of protein and fiber for only 30 calories. It's a great way to banish those hunnger pangs between work and dinner, so stock your desk drawer with them. Bonus: You get 20 percent of three B vitamins for a nutrient boost.
Food Fixes
Snacking on almonds always gives you a powerful lift. They contain protein, fiber and vitamin E, plus every crunch is cholesterol free.
Nail polish stains? Rub nails with a lemon slice until the stain lifts. Lemon's acidity helps break down polish pigments, and its antioxidants brighten nails.
Tasty Tidbit...
For a delicious spread, wrap an entire peeled head of garlic in aluminum foil and bake at 350-degrees for an hour. Slice off the top, squeeze the roasted garlic pulp out of the exposed cloves, drizzle with olive oil and mash with a fork. Try it on crusty bread.
