Health Tidbits for Men Some general health tips for the men.

Fitness Tip

Eat 30 to 60 Minutes After Exercise
As you exercise, tiny tears form in your muscle tissue. It's a natural process that results in more toned muscles as they repair and strengthen. Exercise also causes your body to use glycogen, a form of glucose the body stores in muscle tissue to meet short-term energy needs. Eating a small snack 30 to 60 minutes after a workout is the most beneficial time to help your muscles recover and to replenish the body's nutrient stores. Good post-exercise snack options include a serving of low-fat dairy, which provides lean protein to repair muscles and a piece of fruit for carbohydrates to restore glycogen.

Nutrition Tip

Why Whole Wheat Push?
The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest that whole grains, such as those found in whole wheat pastas, should make up at least half of the grains we eat. A diet rich in whole grains is associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Plus the fiber found in whole grains may also fill you up faster, causing you to eat less. Whole grains include the nutrient-rich bran and germ of the grain, which are missing in the refined grains used to make regular pasta. The germ and endosperm found in whole wheat pasta contain healthy insoluble fiber, B vitamins, vitamin E and protein.

Quick Recipe

Herb Salts
In a 250 degree oven spread a layer of free running salt on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle the chopped fresh herbs on top of the salt, and bake for 10-20 minutes, stirring and checking often. When they are dry enough to crumble, then let cool and crumble the herbs into the salt, stir and place in a jar. You can use this as a seasoning salt; especially good with vegetables! Herbs that work well are chives, oregano, thyme, lemon balm or lemon thyme, parsley rosemary or basil.

Tidbit(s)

To chop garlic: Smash the clove with the flat edge of the knife blade or with a metal bench scraper. Remove the peel; if you have to peel many cloves, blanch them in boiling water for 30 seconds; the skin will slip off easily without smashing the clove first.

Add some cooked dry beans to your salad. Or, if you have a sweet tooth, add chopped apples, pears, or raisins for a great nutrition boost.

Tasty Tidbit...
Stir low-fat or fat-free granola into a bowl of low-fat or fat-free yogurt. Top with sliced apples or berries.
