Fitness Tip

FDA Approval
The National Institute of Health warns against taking any prescription drug with additional herbals sold without U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, that promise big results. The problem is that many contain stimulants and combinations may be dangerous for people with underlying heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic illnesses they may not be aware of. It's far better to stick to supplements and if you're on prescription medications check with your own doctor to be sure an herb is okay to take alongside your meds.

Nutrition Tip

Label Terminology
The label terms, "low fat", "high fiber", "low sugar", "low calorie", and specific health claims (such as "heart healthy") are carefully defined and regulated by the FDA. To learn more about them, go to www.cfsan.fda.gov and click on Food Labeling and Nutrition. For example, a product labeled "low fat" can contain only three grams of fat per serving; a product labeled "low sodium" can contain only 140 milligrams of sodium per serving and so on.

Tidbit(s)

Pets and UTI's
According to Health magazine, UTI's, or urinary tract infections, afflict one in two women. Letting your dog climb in bed with you boosts your risks. In addition, new research shows that people and pets actually share E. coli bacteria, the main source of UTI's. Remedies: Keep pets off of your bed, steam-clean carpets, mop a bit more and wash your hands a lot if you have a pet.

Food Fixes

Snap corncobs in half before slicing off the kernels (full of potassium) so you can prop the cut side of the cob solidly on the cutting board.

Canned, dried, and frozen fruits and vegetables are good options if you don't have fresh on hand. Look for fruit without added sugar or syrups and vegetables without added salt, butter, or cream sauces.

Tasty Tidbit...
Make a fruit salad with cut up apples, oranges, bananas and grapes, then sprinkle in powdered lemonade mix to taste for a sweet tang.
