Fitness Tip

Safe Ways to Raise Your Metabolism
Here are some metabolism-boosting tips:

  • Do 30 minutes or more of aerobic activity at least four to five times a week. Try brisk walking, biking or dancing to burn calories and get your heart pumping.
  • Strength-train three times a week to increase your lean muscle and the rate at which your body burns calories.
  • Don't wait more than five hours between meals (except while sleeping, of course). Skipping meals can slow your metabolism down and deprive you of needed energy.
  • Eat breakfast to wake up your metabolism after a night's sleep. Having breakfast gives you energy and helps prevent overeating at your next meal.

Nutrition Tip

Protein Fights Hunger
Researchers have found that protein releases a hunger-fighting hormone that may help you eat a third less food and shed pesky pounds. Scientists at the University College London in England say this unique hormone makes you feel full long after you leave the dinner table. For most of us, protein makes up about 16 percent of our diet. But the study's author says the best way to trigger the hormone is by upping your protein to 20 to 25 percent. (Eating more protein is controversial: Some experts say it is not dangerous for a healthy adult, but others say it may stress your kidneys). While you can get plenty of protein from low fat meats like chicken and fish, peanuts and cottage cheese will give you a boost, too.

Quick Recipe

Herb and Nut Cream Cheese Log
Mix one package (8 ounces) softened reduced fat cream cheese with one-third grated Parmesan cheese and chopped toasted pecans. Shape into 8-inch log. Roll in mixture of 1/4 cup each toasted chopped pecans and chopped fresh parsley; press gently into log to secure. Serve with crackers. Tidbit(s)

Back Pain?
In a huge Consumer Reports survey, four out of ten people with back pain said deep-tissue massage made them feel "much better". That's more relief than offered by prescription drugs.

Food Fixes

Keep lettuce, cucumbers, bell peppers and green onions fresher longer by wrapping them in a paper towel in your storage bag after cleaning -- will keep fresh up to three weeks. For the lettuce, do remove any brown spots each time you use it, though.

An ounce of cheese gives you about 15 percent of a day's protein and 20 percent of a day's calcium.

Tasty Tidbit...
Add strawberries, blueberries, or bananas to your waffles, pancakes, cereal, oatmeal, or toast.
