Fitness Tip

Get Your ZZZ's
How long you sleep may affect hormones that regulate appetite and body weight. The large, ongoing Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study found that people who sleep less, weigh more. Sleeping only four to five hours a night -- instead of the recommended seven to eight -- alters levels of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin, leading to increased appetite. These hormonal changes combined with having more awake time to eat and feeling too tired to exercise all contribute to weight gain. See also: Insomnia.

Nutrition Tip

Eat More Fruit!
Eating more fruit today may help prevent osteoarthritis of the knee tomorrow. In a recent study that tracked the eating habits of 293 women and men for ten years, those with higher fruit intake were less likely to develop two types of bone abnormalities that can lead to arthritis in knee joints. Researchers credit vitamin C with the improvement. Vitamin C has a direct effect on bone cells, which produce the components and collagen important to bone and joint strength. Other antioxidants, like those found in dark green vegetables, also showed favorable influence, but vitamin C from fruit provided the strongest link.

Quick Recipe

Frosty Fruit Float
Mix 1 tablespoon Kool-Aid Grape Flavor Sugar-Sweetened Soft Drink Mix and one-half cup club soda in tall glass. Add one-quarter cup low fat vanilla ice cream. Top with 1 tablespoon thawed reduced-fat or fat-free Cool Whip and one maraschino cherry, if desired. Makes one serving.

Tidbit(s)

Stick Margarine
Most stick margarines are about as bad for your heart as butter because they are loaded with partically hdrogenated vegetable oil. The trans fat in that oil raises your bad cholesterol, lowers your good cholesterol, and promotes heart disease. See also: Margarine Mayhem; Margarine Madness and/or Butter Verses Margarine.

Food Fixes

One ounce of almonds contains nearly half the recommended daily amount of vitamin E.

Use canola oil in place of some of the butter in your recipes for less saturated fat.

Tasty Tidbit...
Very Vegetable Lasagna: Take your favorite lasagna recipe and try adding different combinations of your favorite vegetables between the layers: mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, onions, or eggplant. Be creative.
