Choosing a Multi-Vitamin -- Tips on choosing a multivitamin that is right for you.

Fitness Tip

A for Activity?
People who exercise regularly burn more calories and have more muscle mass than those who are less active. Aerobic exercise, like brisk walking and swimming, burns calories, while strength training slows the inevitable muscle loss associated with aging, which helps boost metabolism. It's often reported that aerobic and resistance exercise increase metabolism not only while you are exercising, but for several hours afterwards as well. This increase in metabolism is not sustained long-term, however. High-intensity resistance training may have the greatest effect on metabolic rate post exercise, but there are no studies linking the after effects of activity with significant weight loss.

Is Your Apple Juice Healthy?
According to a study, pulpy or "cloudier" apple juice has four times more antioxidants than its clear counterpart. But does cloudy mean unpasteurized and all the safety concerns that go along with that? Experts say it just means that the pulp and other particles, which contain the majority of antioxidants in most fruits, weren't removed. Look for "unfiltered" on the ingredient list. Or, use this trick: Hold the bottle up to the light, and if the juice is so clear you can see through it, chances are you will not see many health benefits, either.

Quip or Quote of the Week

Quick Recipe

Orange Pancakes
2 cups reduced-fat biscuit mix (such as Bisquick)
1 cup orange juice
2 eggs or egg substitute equal to 2 eggs

In a medium bowl, stir together biscuit mix, orange juice and eggs. For each pancake, pour about 3 tablespoons of batter onto a hot, lightly greased griddle or heavy skillet. Cook over medium heat about 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Keep warm while remaining pancakes cook.

Tidbit(s)

Just Ten!
A few short exercise sessions a day can be as valuable as one longer session. The key to making exercise a habit is to fit it comfortably into your schedule. If you can't find a 30-minute block of time, try three 10-minute stints over the course of the day.

Food Fixes

Don't shy away from frozen fruits and vegetables. They are processed at the peak of freshness.

Pungent spices act as a natural decongestant. You breathe better after eating spicy, peppery food.

Tasty Tidbit...
Herb Salts: In a 250 degree oven spread a layer of free running salt on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle the chopped fresh herbs on top of the salt, and bake for 10 to 20 minutes, stirring and checking often. When they are dry enough to crumble, then let cool and crumble the herbs into the salt, stir and place in a jar. You can use this as a seasoning salt; especially good with vegetables! Herbs that work well are chives, oregano, thyme, lemon balm or lemon thyme, parsley rosemary or basil.
