Fitness Tip
Improve Heart Health
To make your heart stronger, train it harder. Perform at least 30 minutes of a moderate cardio activity -- such as walking, running or biking -- each day. You should be able to speak but unable to complete long sentences without feeling breathless. When you can move and talk comfortably, you're ready for a new challenge. Cardio teaches your heart to pump blood more efficiently, which helps reduce blood pressure. Blood chemistry also changes; cholesterol and glucose levels drop, reducing risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Nutrition Tip
Trans Fat Fine Print
A product must contain less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving in order to bear a "no trans fat" label, according to the Food and Drug Administration. However, such products may still contain up to 0.49 grams of trans fat. To keep your intake low, stick to recommended serving sizes and read ingredients lists; they are arranged in order, so the presence of partially hydrogenated oil can provide a clue as to the presence of artificial trans fat in a "trans fat free" product. Most commercially produced fried foods, baked goods, and stick margarines are made with artificial trans fat. Natural trans fat is found in red meat, milk, butter, and cheese. Tidbit(s)
Bread
The belief that bread is fattening is a myth. A single slice of bread contains about 1g of fat and 80 calories, most of which come from complex carbohydrates, the body’s preferred source of fuel. A family of four can live ten years from the bread produced by one acre of wheat. There are more than 1,000 varieties of bread on the market – enough to please any palate.
Food Fixes
Almonds are an antioxidant powerhouse. Researchers found that almonds have a large variety of antioxidants similar to those found in fruits and vegetables, tea and wine. These antioxidants are in the skins of the almond and work together with Vitmain E to promote healthy heart health by protecting cholesterol from becoming too sticky and clogging arteries.
Pour salad dressing into its bottle top instead of directly onto your salad to keep portions in check. A capful is 1 tablespoon.
