The Religion of Pre and Post Workout Nutrition  The results of a comprehensive study on pre and post-workout nutrition.

Fitness Tip

Control Weight
Weight control is a matter of balancing calories burned against calories consumed. Increase your workout time from 60 to 90 minutes most days. Increase your intensity, too and measure it with a heart-rate monitor. To remain in weight-control range, your target heart rate must be around 70 to 80 percent of its maxiumum. To calculate your heart rate, you will need to subtract your age from 220, multiply by 0.7 or 0.8 to find your target zone. For example, if you are 45 years old, 220 minus 45 equals 175 maximum beats per minute -- 70 percent is 122.5, and 80 percent is 40. As your heart strengthens from exercise, your metabolism will also improve and you will build muscle -- which increases the amount of calories you burn.

Nutrition Tip

Nontraditional Breakfast Fare
If you dislike regular breakfast foods, try something different, such as:
Leftover vegetable pizza
Fresh fruit topped with low-fat yogurt and crispy whole-grain cereal
Vegetables, salsa and low-fat shredded cheeses wrapped in a tortilla
A smoothie blended from exotic fruits, some low-fat yogurt and a spoonful of wheat germ
Whole-wheat crackers with low-fat cheese
A microwaved potato topped with broccoli and grated Parmesan cheese

Think low-fat and fresh lean meats or even fish, low-fat milk products, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. The combinations are limited only by your imagination and taste.

Quip or Quote of the Week
