Fitness Tip

Lift weights, lose weight.
Dieters who lift weights and eat well lose more body fat, and feel stronger and more flexible. Lifting weights as you diet makes it easier to shed pounds; increased muscle mass will boost your metabolic rate over time, allowing you to burn calories even at rest. It also gives your muscles a tight, firm appearance.

Nutrition Tip

Packaged Chicken's Hidden Salt and Water
Some chicken packages have the words, "Contains up to 15 percent natural chicken broth" on the front label, just below the name of the chicken. That would be your clue that the chicken has been infused with a salt solution that adds 140 milligrams of sodium to each 4-ounce chicken breast. It is also a clue that you are paying chicken prices for water. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts from Perdue's Tender and Tasty line have roughly 250mg more sodium than boneless, skinless breasts from the company's Fit 'n Easy line. And both Pilgrim's Pride EatWell Stay Healthy and 100 percent Natural lines have added salt. Foster Farms, Bell and Evans, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods do not salt their fresh chicken parts.

Don't Be So Salty
Diets high in super salty foods could spell trouble for people's colons, early research suggests. Women in a study who subsisted on a traditional Japanese diet, which tends to be very high in sodium, exhibited an increased risk of colon cancer. More research is needed to confirm the link, but in the meantime, kick up the flavor of your favorite foods with herbs and low-sodium spices instead. See also: Low Salt/Sodium Recipes

Food Fixes

Tired of zucchini bread every fall? Put it in spaghetti, meat loaf or casseroles. It has such little flavor, you can even grate it for cookies or grind it up and hide it in hamburgers.

To peel a tomato without a lot of fuss, run the back or dull side of a paring knife over the whole tomato. Turn the knife over and peel away. You'll find that the peel comes off very easily.

Tasty Tip: Add a little chopped onion when cooking carrots.
