Fitness Tip

Is All Body Fat Bad?
Everyone has some body fat. In fact, "essential" body fat helps keep you healthy. It cushions and insulates your joints, tissues and vital organs. It helps regulate body temperature and stores important vitamins. It even helps the body sustain itself when food is scarce. If you had too little body fat, your body would start breaking down muscle tissue for energy. Too much body fat, however, can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, and certain types of cancer. To determine how much body fat is right for you, I recommend you consult your doctor. See also: The Skinny on Fat

Three Veggie Tips
1) Keep your kitchen full of vegetables that won't spoil quickly -- onions, garlic, potatoes, winter squash, carrots.
2) At a salad bar, fill up your plate with salad greens first.
3) Next time you make pasta with vegetables, use half as much pasta and twice as many vegetables.
Bonus tip: Eating out or ordering in tonight? How about a side of broccoli with that? Surveys reveal that when people eat foods prepared outside the home, they average 25 percent fewer fruits and vegetables -- so make an effort to include vegetables in your order.

Quick Recipe

Real Potato Chips
Cut potatoes in half crosswise exposing two flat surfaces. Use a wide potato slicer and cut paper thin slices. Place individual slices on an oiled cookie sheet. Brush the tops of the potatoes with a pure vegetable oil, preferably a corn oil. Bake at 450 degrees approximately ten minutes or until golden brown. Finally, place the chips in a brown paper bag with a small amount of sea salt (1/ 4 teaspoon per potato) and shake. These chips are low in fat and crunchy.

Tidbit(s)

Lying Eyes
Your eyes really can be bigger than your stomach. In a recent study, participants ate soup from either regular bowls or, unbeknownst to them, self-refilling bowls. People who ate from the self-refilling bowls consumed about 73 percent more than the people who ate from regular bowls, but they didn't feel fuller. Bottom line: don't let your eyes decide when you've had enough. Use measuring cups and scales to help you avoid overeating.

Food Fixes

Bake potatoes in muffin pans so that they will not roll around and be easier to remove from the oven.

In the yard, olive oil can help keep moles away. Saturate an old rag with the oil and stuff it into a mole hole. The animals hate the smell.

No More Soggy Sandwiches! The bread will not get soggy on make-ahead sandwiches if you spread mustard, pickle relish or ketchup between the cheese or meat slices, instead of directly on the bread.
