Healing Heartburn
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid splashes back up into your esophagus, causing a burning sensation in your chest, according to Dr. Virender Sharma, director of the Esophageal Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. "Fried foods, fatty foods and big meals produce more stomach acid, so it is more likely that acid will splash back up." When heartburn hits, try the following fixes:
- Chew each mouthful thoroughly so it is easier to digest. A good trick is to put your fork down between bites and swallow before picking it up again.
- Talk a long walk after dinner. Light activity helps your stomach empty faster.
- Slippery elm bark tea, when consumed with a meal, is said to coat the lining of your esophagus, making it less sensitive to the acid.
Nutrition Tip
Working In Your Morning Meal
If your excuse for missing breakfast is lack of time, figure out what you'll eat the night before and get up 10 minutes earlier to enjoy it. Or pack something to take with you.
Think you're saving calories by skipping breakfast? Chances are you'll be ravenous by lunchtime, which may lead you to eat more. Or your hunger at mid-morning may tempt you to indulge in a high-fat treat that someone brought to the office.
Your morning meal doesn't have to mean loading up on sugar, fat and cholesterol. Making nutritious breakfast choices can set you up for healthier eating all day long.

Quick Recipe
Peanut Butter with Apples
The apple's fiber and complex carbs get a boost from peanut butter's fat and protein. Choose chunky peanut butter for more fiber and a "chewier" texture. For a change of taste, try a pear or banana, or use soy nut butter, which contains heart-healthy isoflavones.
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 medium apple, sliced into six slices
Place approximately one-half teaspoon of peanut butter on each apple slice and enjoy.

Tidbit(s)
FDA regulations require certain information to appear on dietary supplement labels, including:
- a descriptive name of the product, stating that it is a "supplement"
- the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor
- a complete list of ingredients
- the net contents of the product.
In addition, each dietary supplement -- except for some small-volume products or those produced by eligible small businesses -- must have nutrition labeling in the form of a "Supplement Facts" panel. This label must identify each dietary ingredient contained in the product.
Food Fixes
Tone down the pungency of onions by peeling and slicing them, then soak them in ice water for 30 to 60 minutes before using. This process leaves them tasting mild and sweet.
Don't add oil to pasta during cooking. If you have enough water, you won't need to add oil to prevent sticking.
If your child draws on your wood furniture with crayons, rub a bit of mayonnaise into the spot with a soft cloth. It will lift crayon marks in no time.
