Fitness Tip
What -- and How -- to Eat After Working Out
This is the time for those carbohydrates. A sweaty workout depletes the stores of fuel called glycogen, in your muscles. Replenish them by drinking a glass of orange juice or heating half of a bagel. And do it quickly as studies show that your body makes new glycogen most readily in the 15 minutes after exercising. If you miss that window you might not be as strong for your next workout. To get an extra glycogen boost, throw in some protein, too, such as peanut butter on crackers or apples, or a few slices of turkey on wheat bread. Protein will also help repair and build your muscles after strength training.
Nutrition Tip
Morning Eaters Healthier
People who skip breakfastget fewer important nutrients such as calcium, potassium, folic acid and fiber, reports a Michigan State University study. Those who avoid breakfast eat more sodium, which could increase the risk of high blood pressure. The ideal wake-me-up includes grains, protein, fruit and a little "good" fat . Alternate approach: Scramble an egg or egg substitute equivalent. St. Louis University researchers found that overweight people who began the day with an egg and toast ate 22 percent fewer calories and 15 percent less fat at lunch than people who had a bagel and yogurt for breakfast.

If you visit the candy machine, sticking with gum may help you control calories. At 5 to 10 calories a sugar-free stick, it's a good alternative to hard candy, which is loaded with sugar and can contain up to 50 calories per little piece. And how many of us ever stop at one? One more bonus: Getting your jaw moving to chew burns about 12 extra calories per hour!
Food Fixes
Quickly ripen your avocados: Place unripe avocados together with an apple in a paper bag. Pierce the bag in several places and leave the bag at room temperature for 1 to 3 days.
Buy frozen soup stock from the store and heat it up with small pieces of meat, poultry, grains, herbs and pasta for home made flair.
Red pepper flakes, chile pepper and even paprika are great ways to make mild foods sizzle while keeping the salt at bay. Many studies even suggest that spicy foods can increase your metabolism naturally.
