What makes people overweight? -- People gain weight when the number of calories they eat is more than the number of calories their bodies use. Many factors can play a part in weight gain.

Fitness Tip

Early Evening Exercise
By early evening, your body temperature is getting higher, which means your joints are more flexible, your muscles can produce more force and your cardiovascular system is more efficient. That means you will get more out of exercise and enjoy it more, too.

Nutrition Tip

Appetizer, Please!
The bread basket is filled with empty calories that could add up to 100 calories or more per typical roll. To avoid filling up on the bread in restaurants, ask the waiter for an appetizer right away when he/she comes for your drink order. Good choices include steamed shellfish, shrimp cocktail, salads (dressing on the side), crudite, and meaty portobello mushrooms. See also:  5-A-Day Low Fat Appetizer Recipes

Quick Recipe

Baked Pecan-Coated Chicken
Heat oven to 350-degrees. Coat four chicken cutlets with mixture of 3-tablespoons flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper; then dip into two beaten egg whites. Next, roll chicken in 1-cup finely chopped pecans. Bake on foil-lined baking sheet coated with vegetable oil spray, 12 to 15 minutes or until no longer pink and juices run clear.
Serving Suggestions: Serve with rice and crust roll. Purchase a blueberry cobbler for dessert.

Quench Cravings with Mint
When you are tempted to stray away from your eating objectives, quench the craving with a stick of spearmint gum or a small peppermint candy. The flavor of mint is so strong and recognizable, it's likely to ward off the urge to take a bit out of whatever food you are craving.

Food Fixes

Apple chips are very much like potato chips, only healthier because they are made from apples. For a sweet treat, look for baked, not fried varieties. They even come in different flavors.

Most of us know how good apples and peanut butter are -- well, try pears and peanut butter! Pears make a delicious alternative.
