Fitness Tip

Healing Cardio
Not all cardio workouts have to be pounding or punishing. You get plenty of benefit by swapping in a lower impact "healing" activity such as cycling, spinning, rowing, swimming, cross-country skiing), because these also promote endurance. In fact, varying your workouts by cross-training prevents injury and burnout, so you can stick to exercise long-term.

A Healthier Trick or Treat
Just in time for Halloween, candy has gotten a health makeover. Reese's cups, Twizzlers and Hershey's chocolate bars now come sugar free. They're made with sugar alcohols instead, which do not raise blood sugar as much. Innovative Candy Concepts, an Atlanta-based company, just overhauled its sweet treats to replace refined sugars with fruit-juice concentrate. The new Dreamy Chews gummy candy is made with real fruit and honey, plus added vitamin C. New and tasty Florida's Natural Fruit Snacks chewy candies have no preservatives or gelatin, and they are made with pear and orange juice, vitamin C and eight other vitamins and minerals. Plus, they come in miniature cartons that are perfect for trick-or-treaters. Don't forget to check out the Healthy Halloween Recipes!:  Healthy Halloween Recipes

Quick Recipe

Sweet 'n Spicy Apple Cranberry Sauce
2 cups apple sauce (any variety, but chunky or Homestyle is recommended)
1 can (16 ounces) whole-berry cranberry sauce
3/4 cup golden raisins
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Combine all ingredients in small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring often until mixture starts to bubble. Remove from heat and let cool completely. Makes about 4 cups. Serve with turkey, chicken, pork or ham. Can refrigerate up to one week.

Tidbit(s)

Try Nutmeg!
Fall is a great time for "spicing things up"! Nutmeg has an earthy, nutty and slightly sweet flavor that complements both sweet and savory dishes. Whole nutmeg is a smart alternative to ground because it lasts indefinitely when stored in a cool, dry place. Grate a small amount into cream sauces, pastas, rice dishes, soups and desserts to give them an extra depth of flavor.

Food Fixes

Layer thick slices of apple in turkey or ham sandwiches for extra flavor and crunch.

There is actually no butter in apple butter. Try this no-fat buttery-smooth treat on bread, toast (great with peanut butter!) or crackers.

Pair raw apples with Cheddar cheese for a quick, healthy snack.
