Fitness Tip

Are You Active on a Daily Basis?
You're devoted to your favorite seasonal sport, or you go to the gym regularly. Of course, that's good for your heart. But it is also important to create an active lifestyle that keeps you moving every day, especially if you have a sedentary job. That way you won't be completely dependent on your workouts for physical activity. Get up and walk at the office, and use a pedometer to track your steps. Engage your abdominal muscles while you're sitting in traffic. Stretch your calves while you're waiting for the clothes dryer to finish. There are exercises that you can do anywhere. In addition, if you are a seasonal athlete, or miss gym workouts due to frequent business travel, an active lifestyle will help you manage your weight in the off-season or when you're on the road.

Nutrition Tip

The Benefits of Vegetables High in Carotenoids
People who eat vegetables high in carotenoids, such as spinach and collard greens, have a 43-percent lower risk of advanced macular degeneration than those who eat foods containing less of these nutrients . There is also evidence that antioxidants -- in food, as well as supplements -- can slow the progression of macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss among older adults.

Antioxidant Vitamins
What are antioxidant vitamins and why are they important? Our bodies are actually battlegrounds for infection and diseases. Normal body functions, such as breathing or physical activity, and other lifestyle habits, such as smoking, produce substances called free radicals that attack healthy cells. When these healthy cells are weakened, they are more susceptible to cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, and carotenoids, which include beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, help protect healthy cells from damage caused by free radicals. They are essential to good health and are found naturally in a wide variety of foods and plants, including many fruits and vegetables.

Quick Recipe

Spice Rubs
Spice rubs are a wonderful way to infuse flavor into meats without adding fat. Simply cover the trimmed meat with the mix and then grill, broil or roast. Combine the following ingredients together for a spice "rub" with Middle-Eastern flair that can be added to beef, pork, lamb or chicken (makes 2 tablespoons):
2 teaspoons ground, black pepper
1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon (each) ground coriander and salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Block That Cholesterol!
The FDA approved a heart-protection drug that battle high blood cholesterol on a new front: in the gut. Ezetimibe (Zetia) blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Studies have turned up no significant side effects. It is now believed by many professionals that Zetia will generally be used to provide further cholesterol reduction when statins alone are not enough. It can be used as a stand-alone drug for those people who cannot tolerate statins. For an all-natural, Dr. Approved supplement, consider Cholesterol Support.

Food Fixes

Try spraying your beaters with nonstick cooking spray before mixing cake and cookie batters to prevent clumping.

When water gets boring, try trading plain water for seltzer served out of a champagne flute.

When preparing corn for dinner, instead of adding a pat of butter, try a little reduced-fat cream cheese. Let it stand a minute or two to melt then stir and serve. You will have rich-tasting corn with less fat.
