The Physiological Effects of a Hangover

Fitness Tip

Magnesium and Energy
Did you know magnesium is an essential mineral that activates more than 300 enzymes in your body? Some of these enzymes are responsible for releasing energy from food sources, preventing muscle cramping, promoting growth, and protecting against heart disease, stroke, kidney stones and hypertension. Include food sources such as green leafy vegetables, fortified breads, cereals, beans, nuts, oysters and scallops.

Nutrition Tip

Milk Calcium vs. Orange Juice Calcium
Is the calcium you get from supplements or fortified orange juice absorbed as well as the calcium from milk? Scientists at Tuft's Mineral Bioavailability Laboratory say, "Yes". The results of an experiment done by Tuft's showed that blood and urine tests proved that calcium from all three sources was equally absorbed. This is good news, especially for people who do not like -- or cannot drink -- milk. However, it is worthy to note that this doesn't make the three calcium sources nutritional equals. Milk, for example, contains protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12, riboflavin and phosphorus, while orange juice has vitamin C and folate. In other words, building a healthful diet is not just about getting enough calcium. It is important to construct and eating plan with a wealth of vitamins and minerals, which is why fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, low-fat dairy and other low-fat protein sources should all be figured in.

Herb of the Week

Turmeric Root
Turmeric Root is one of the most widely used herbs for joint support in India, where it is commonly combined with ginger. Studies have shown that turmeric has strong antioxidant activity. It is more potent than either vitamin C or vitamin E. One component, dimethylbenzyl alcohol, normalizes cholesterol in the blood, while curcumin removes accumulation of cholesterol in the liver. Turmeric normalizes arterial health. Turmeric is also called for when indigestion, gas, and eliminatory issues imbalance the body. In Asia, turmeric is a major skin support herb.

Obesity and Cataracts
In a study of more than 130,000 people, obese men and women were more likely to be diagnosed with cataracts than people of normal weight. Insulin resistance, which is more common in the obese, may contribute to cataracts because it leads to higher levels of sugar in the blood and, possibly, the eye.

Food Fixes

Coca Cola will clean road haze from your windshield.

Serve tuna or egg salad a new way by cutting off the top of a hard roll, "hollowing" it out and filling it with the salad. Add onion, tomato and lettuce and put the "top" back on.

Freezing blueberries is a snap! Place dry, unwashed blueberries in a container, seal and freeze up to two months without losing flavor or quality.

To keep salad fresh, place an inverted saucer in the bottom of the bowl before adding lettuce. The extra water will drain and accumulate under the saucer instead of soaking into the salad.
