Exercise: How much is Enough?

Fitness Tip

Knock Down Cholesterol
It's not just about diet -- physical activity makes a huge difference, too. Exercise improves your blood cholesterol profile by lowering your levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and, more important, boosting your levels of HDL (protective) cholesterol. It also reduces your overall risk of dying prematurely and helps you control your weight; significantly reduces your risk of dying from coronary artery disease or a heart attack; helps your heart pump more blood with each contraction; reduces your risk of developing high blood pressure and helps lower existing high blood pressure; and improves blood circulation throughout your body.

Nutrition Tip

Probiotics: Yogurt or Supplement?
A new study of Lactobacillus (probiotic) supplements found that none of the 20 randomly tested brands contained organisms that were identical to those stated on the bottle label. In fact, 30-percent of the brands sampled were contaminated with various other microorganisms, some of which could be harmful (such as those that can cause gastrointestinal illness). Twenty-percent of the brands sampled contained dead organisms, which provide no health benefit. Lactobacilli are beneficial bacteria that live in the body, generally in the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina. They are also found in yogurt. Probiotics are often recommended after taking antibiotics, as the medication often kills both bad and good bacteria.

Keep cabbage odor to a minimum when cooking by putting a celery rib or several lemon wedges in the kettle.
