Fitness Tip

Stuck in an exercise rut?
Just because you have a regimen, it doesn't have to be routine. The more different kinds of activity you do, the greater the odds you'll find a way to exercise and not get bored. Switching between exercises may also reduce the risk of injuries from repeated stress on the same parts of the body. And, variety means that regardless of changing seasons, locales, availability of exercise buddies, etc., you're more likely always to find a way to keep exercising.

Nutrition Tip

How Lean is Lean Meat?
The government has outlined strict regulations for products labeled "lean" and "extra lean". Lean means the food has less than 10 grams of fat and less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving and per 100 grams (about 3-1/2 ounces). Extra lean means the food has less than five grams of fat, less than two grams of saturated fat and less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving and per 100 grams.
Here are some extra-lean cuts, beginning with the leanest (chicken breast). One serving is considered 3-1/2 ounces of meat, roughly the size of a deck of cards.

Herb of the Week

Rooibos Leaf
Rooibos Leaf is a shrubby African legume that is a bedtime favorite among South African herbalists, consumers and even physicians. South Africans also use it to improve appetite, calm the digestive tract and reduce nervous tension. They regard it as safe enough to give infants. This sweet, relaxing tea enhances immune response, reduces seasonal sneezing, balances blood sugar and blood fats and helps with heartburn.

Quick Recipe

Tuna Casserole
Mix one can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed 98-percent fat free cream of celery soup (undiluted) and 1-cup of 1-percent milk until smooth. Add one can (6 ounces) drained water-packed albacore tuna, 1-cup uncooked elbow macaroni, 1-cup frozen green peas, 1/2 cup chopped green onions and 3/4 cup reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese; mix well. Pour into 2-quart baking dish. Cover; refrigerate overnight. Microwave, covered, on high 15 to 17 minutes or until bubbly. Uncover; sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese and let stand five minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve with suggestions: Crisp lettuce wedges and reduced-fat salad dressing. Add sourdough bread. For dessert, top canned mandarin orange sections with toasted coconut.

Don't Peel Away the Nutrients
There are great fiber and nutritional advantages and almost no risk of chemical residues in eating unpeeled fruit. The FDA reports that, during annual random produce testing, 99 percent of the produce is either residue-free or well below EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) limits.

Clean a thermos bottle.: Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka-Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary).

To save leftover canned tomato paste: Place level tablespoons-full on a foil or plastic-wrap lined pan; freeze until solid. Transfer the frozen paste to a self-sealing freezer bag, label and date. The frozen paste can be added directly to hot sauces, soups and stews.

A squeeze of fresh lemon or orange juice gives canned chicken broth a fresh flavor.
