A Message From the Heart

Fitness Tip

Hit that perfect beat.
Dancing raises your pulse -- a key to a healthy heart. Running and biking will do the same. Regular physical activity has many other disease-fighting benefits. It reduces your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, lowers your risk of developing cancer, and helps you prevent bone loss (osteoporosis), and maintain mobility and independence in later years.

Nutrition Tip

Healthy Cut Herbs
A well-tended herb garden should supply your kitchen with fresh herbal flavors all summer long. If the herbs are not harvested properly, your supply can dwindle prematurely. Here are a few tips:

  • Basil, marjoram, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory and thyme should be cut through the stem, above a set of leaves, removing one-third to one-half of the stem. The plant will grow two new branches where it was cut.
  • Angelica, chervil, cilantro, dill, fennel and parsley should be cut at the base of the stem. New growth will emerge from the center of the plant.
  • Tarragon, lemon and verbena and chives should be cut within an inch of the ground. Tarragon and lemon verbena should be cut mid-stem, above a set of leaves.

Herb of the Week

Parsley Leaf
Parsley Leaf has been used since antiquity for the urinary system. It is diuretic, has a long history of herbal use in treating bladder imbalances and helps with water retention as well. Parsley is a source of phytoestrogens, so it benefits normal menstruation, menopause and promotes lactation. It aids and works as a digestive when combined with turmeric. Rich in boron and fluorine, critical minerals for bone health, it also contains 3.5 times as much vitamin C as oranges, and twice as much calcium as broccoli.

Quick Recipe

Tidbit(s)

Go swinging!
Half an hour pumping your legs and flying higher on a swing burns more than 100 calories and works both the front and back of your thighs. And, if you push someone else, you also give your biceps a workout. It's fun, too!

Food Fixes

When making strawberry pie, always wash and then hull the berries. Then be sure to let them drain upside-down on a paper towel for about 30 minutes. This eliminates excess moisture, helping to prevent a soggy pie.

When grilling fish, make sure the grill is very hot and brush oil on the fish before placing on the grill.

Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes. If you have really fine jewelry, use jeweler's recommendation rather than above.

Nuts are easier to chop when they are warm. Heat in the microwave on high for two minutes or in a 325-degree oven for about five minutes.
