Fitness Tip

Benefits of Weightlifting
Strength training such as weightlifting can slow or stop muscle and bone loss and may actually increase muscle strength and mass. It may slow or prevent osteoporosis and may lower the risk of falls which can cause hip fractures or other injuries, as well as improve balance. Regular activities such as running and swimming raise heart rate and may reduce artery stiffening, which can otherwise contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Consistent physical activity may reduce the likelihood of developing adult onset diabetes or at least allow for better control, because exercise increases the ability to regulate blood glucose.

Nutrition Tip

Sweetening the Pot
A spoonful of sugar works just as well on vegetables as it does in making medicine go down. Studies done with adult college students showed they liked broccoli and cauliflower more when the vegetables were accented with a 5-percent sugar solution. It also produced a greater liking for the vegetables later when they were unsweetened. Go lightly when you sprinkle on sugar; overly sweetened vegetables can be off-putting. Suggestion: If sugared broccoli seems too odd for you, stir-fry vegetables with a mix of soy sauce, sugar, garlic and ginger to create a sweet glaze.

Herb of the Week

Mullein Leaf
Mullein Leaf is a common wildflower that grows almost anywhere. Mullein leaf and flower is an expectorant and demulcent (soothing) herb. Using mullein in a tea for coughs and respiratory irritations is approved in Europe. The actions are from mucus loosening saponins and this can bring relief. Mullein is an immune enhancer, active against respiratory disorders. Mullein is most effective when combined with herbs with similar qualities, such as slippery elm bark and elecampane root.

Food Fixes

When cooking with garlic cloves, pierce each one with a toothpick. This makes them easy to retrieve especially in a sauce.

Butter the rim of a pan in which you cook rice or macaroni so it won't boil over.

Spray a bit of non-stick spray on your grater before shredding cheese. It prevents the cheese from sticking to the blade.

Place bay leaves in kitchen drawers and in flour/sugar containers to keep crawling insects away.
