Fitness Tip

Supermarket Sweep
Put exercise on your shopping list -- it's easy to burn calories right where you buy 'em. Carry two bags of groceries home for an impromptu workout. Or, carry your child instead of using a stroller. These are just two ways to fit fitness into your day without blocking out over an hour to get to the gym. Squeeze in bits of activity whenever you have an opportunity, and it can add up to a big difference in how you look and feel. And even moderate physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease and early death.

Nutrition Tip

Healthy Eating Reminders
If you're having trouble sticking to three meals a day because of dieting, try eating small meals throughout the day. Mini meals with high-fiber content for breakfast and lunch (try whole fruit) will prevent a turkey and fixings binge.
Eat your vegetables first. They'll fill you up leaving less room for calorie packed goodies like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pie.
Don't sample every side dish. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to put it in your mouth. Pick your two favorite side dishes and enjoy only those.
Slow down! Remember that it takes 20 minutes for your brain to register fullness. Put down your fork and drink some water between bites.
With the right game plan, your mind and your tummy will be content and comfortable!

Nutrient of the Week

Amla Fruit
Amla Fruit or Emblic Fruit (Amalaki) is one of the most useful Ayurvedic medicines, and a strong rejuvenative. It is an exceptionally rich source of vitamin C. Amla is used for a wide variety of conditions involving the digestive tract and its organs. It is the prime general herb for the eyes, and is said to treat premature gray hair. Amla is the basis for the famous Ayurvedic rejuvenative jam, chyavanprash, and the widely used combination herbal remedy, triphala.

Quick Recipe

Horseradish Butter with Hot Corn-on-the-Cob
Combine 1/4 cup softened whipped butter or reduced-fat margarine, 1-1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard, 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish and a dash of ground black pepper. Put on hot corn-on-the-cob.

Tidbit(s)

Bagel with Cream Cheese vs. Yogurt with Granola
Calories, carbohydrates and number of fat grams are similar in both of these breakfast favorites. But half of the bagel combo's fat is saturated, and it contains nearly 600 milligrams of sodium - more than a fifth of your recommended daily intake. The yogurt-granola combo, however, packs almost as much calcium as a glass of milk (223 milligrams) and half the sodium and cholesterol of the bagel.

Food Fixes

To aid in washing dishes, add a tablespoon of baking soda to soap water. This will soften hands while cutting through grease.

For quick wipe-ups of small spills, keep a box of plain white tissues near the stove to use instead of paper towels.

Never wash a rolling pin because it may cause warping. Immediately after rolling out dough, wipe the rolling pin clean with a towel.

If something spills over in the oven, first sprinkle it with salt and remove with a metal spatula, then wipe with a damp sponge.
