Fitness Tip

How Does Physical Activity Help Control Weight?
Regular physical activity helps to control your weight by burning excess calories that would otherwise end up being stored as fat. Your body weight is regulated by the total number of calories you consume and use each day. Everything you eat contains calories, and everything you do, including sleeping, breathing, and even resting, burns calories. Any physical activity you do in addition to your normal everyday activities will burn extra calories. Balancing the calories you use via physical activity with the number of calories you consume will help you manage your weight. The key to successful weight management is to make physical activity a part of your daily routine.
Keep these simple rules of weight management in mind:

  • Calories in Food > Calories Used = Weight Gain
  • Calories in Food < Calories Used = Weight Loss
  • Calories in Food = Calories Used = Weight Maintenance

Prevent Sun Damage with Foods
Scientists in Australia have discovered, by measuring sun damage to the back of the hand, that those who followed a healthy diet high in antioxidants, enjoyed protection from the sun's worst skin damage. Experts say that oxidative damage from frequent sun exposure is the culprit behind most skin wrinkling. High SPF (Sun Protection Factor) foods include legumes (beans, peanuts, peas), olive oil and vegetables. Low SPF foods include butter, full-fat dairy foods and meat.

Nutrient of the Week

Sports Drink Idea
Here is a sports drink idea that both works and tastes great - and you make it yourself: Take a glass of orange juice and add a pinch of salt; dilute with an equal amount of water. This electrolyte-rich beverage provides roughly the same number of calories and grams of carbohydrate as commercially prepared sports drinks. Because orange juice contains fructose (fruit sugar), studies show it may help keep levels of blood sugar more stable than commercial drinks made with glucose.

Food Fixes

To help remove the silk from corn on the cob, get off as much as you can by hand and then use a wet washcloth and stroke downwards to remove the rest of the silk.

Add a couple of drops of lemon juice to potato water and it will whiten the boiled potatoes.

To store celery, wash off, cut off ends and save in a tall glass jar or pitcher filled with water. Your celery will keep much longer this way.

Onions have you crying?? When cutting onions dampen the cutting board with white vinegar to stop the tears.
